Direct answer

Residence, FEMA status and tax reporting can change on different tests

A permanent move does not make every legal status change on one universal date. Indian income-tax residence follows statutory day-count and related rules, while bank-account treatment and FEMA residence use their own facts. Work through each system separately and keep the records supporting the conclusion.

  1. 1Preserve travel history and determine the Indian tax status first.
  2. 2Notify banks and financial institutions using their required evidence.
  3. 3Map foreign income, assets and taxes into the Indian reporting year.
  4. 4Review retirement accounts, equity awards and property before taking an irreversible action.
