TDS on Salary Income
Consolidated under Section 392 of the Income-tax Act, 2025. The notified filing codes are 1001 for government employees other than Union Government employees, 1002 for employees other than government employees, and 1003 for Indian Government employees. Tax is deducted at the applicable average income-tax rate.
TDS on Bank FD & Savings Interest
Consolidated under Section 393. Filing code 1020 covers bank/co-operative-bank/notified post-office interest paid to a senior citizen, 1021 covers the corresponding non-senior case, and 1022 covers other interest payers. The respective thresholds are ₹1,00,000, ₹50,000 and ₹10,000. Form 121 replaces legacy Forms 15G/15H.
TDS on Contractor & Vendor Payments
Consolidated under Section 393(1). Filing code 1023 applies when the contractor is an individual/HUF and code 1024 applies to another contractor. TDS is 1% or 2%, respectively, when a single sum exceeds ₹30,000 or the tax-year aggregate exceeds ₹1,00,000.
TDS on Insurance Commission
Consolidated under Section 393 with Payment Code 1005. The annual threshold is ₹20,000. The resident non-company rate is 2%; company payments follow the applicable rate in force rather than one blanket rate.
TDS on Commission or Brokerage
Consolidated under Section 393 with Payment Code 1006. TDS applies at 2% when annual commission or brokerage exceeds ₹20,000.
TDS on Rent (Plant & Machinery)
Consolidated under Section 393 with Payment Code 1008. TDS at 2% applies when rent for a month or part of a month exceeds ₹50,000.
TDS on Rent (Land, Building, Furniture)
Consolidated under Section 393 with Payment Code 1009. TDS at 10% applies when rent for a month or part of a month exceeds ₹50,000.
TDS on Professional & Technical Services
Consolidated under Section 393. Filing code 1026 covers specified technical services, film royalty and qualifying call-centre payments; 1027 covers professional services and specified non-compete income; and 1028 covers director remuneration not subject to salary TDS. The ₹50,000 threshold applies to the represented technical/professional categories, while director remuneration has a nil threshold.
TDS on Transfer of Immovable Property
Consolidated under Section 393. The buyer deducts 1% on the higher of sale consideration or stamp-duty value when either relevant value is ₹50 lakh or more, subject to statutory exclusions. This PAN-based transaction is reported through Form 141; the notified Form 140 code list does not assign it one general 4-digit filing code.
TDS on Rent by Individuals / HUF
Consolidated under Section 393(1). The relevant individual/HUF tenant rule applies 2% TDS when rent exceeds ₹50,000 for a month or part of a month, subject to its payer conditions. This PAN-based transaction is reported through Form 141 rather than one general Form 140 filing code.
TDS on Commission & Contracts by Individuals
Consolidated under Section 393(1). The applicable individual/HUF payer deducts 2% on aggregate contractual, professional, commission or brokerage payments exceeding ₹50 lakh in the tax year. This PAN-based transaction is reported through Form 141 rather than one general Form 140 filing code.
TDS on Cash Withdrawal from Bank
Consolidated under Section 393(3). Filing code 1064 is used when the cash-withdrawal payee is a co-operative society and code 1065 when the payee is another person. Rates, thresholds and exceptions depend on the payee and filing conditions.
TDS on Purchase of Goods
Consolidated under Section 393(1). A qualifying buyer with preceding-year business turnover above ₹10 crore deducts 0.1% on the purchase amount exceeding ₹50 lakh in the tax year, subject to exclusions and overlap rules.
TDS on Transfer of Crypto & VDAs
Consolidated under Section 393(1). The 1% rule is subject to the ₹10,000/₹50,000 no-deduction conditions. Notified filing code 1037 covers the represented TAN-reported transfer by a payer other than an individual/HUF, while code 1038 covers the Note 6 cash/in-kind case; applicable PAN-based transactions are reported through Form 141.
TDS on Non-Resident Remittances
Payments to non-residents are governed by Section 393(2), with deduction at the applicable Act rate or a beneficial treaty rate when treaty conditions and documentation are satisfied.
Mandatory Higher TDS for Missing PAN
Governed by Section 397(2) of the 2025 Act. TDS applies at the higher of the prescribed rate, the rate in force, or 20% when the deductee does not furnish PAN, subject to statutory exceptions.
Tax Collected at Source (TCS) Rules
Consolidated under Section 394. For Tax Year 2026-27 this includes LRS rules with a ₹10 lakh threshold, overseas-tour packages at 2% without a threshold, motor vehicles above ₹10 lakh at 1%, and scrap at 2%. The exact rate and taxable base depend on the payment category.
