RNOR return-date calculator

Turn a proposed return date into an inclusive Tax Year 2026-27 India day count, then test the represented current-year and historical residence conditions.

Test a proposed permanent return date

The date is counted through 31 March 2027, inclusive. Change every historical input to match your records.

Exclude the proposed return date and all later dates to prevent double counting.

NRI

Non-Resident Indian (NRI): Indian-source and India-received income is generally taxable in India; foreign-source income is generally outside the Indian tax scope. The resident-individual rebate under section 156 is not available. Treaty and source rules can change the result.

The “days before return” input must exclude every date from the proposed return date onward; otherwise the same day is counted twice.

Direct answer

A return date changes the current-year day count; RNOR also depends on earlier years

Returning late in a tax year can affect current-year residence, but it does not by itself prove RNOR status. The historical seven-year day count, ten-year residence history, citizenship, Indian income and deemed-residence facts also matter. Use travel records rather than passport-status assumptions.

  1. 1Count every part of a day in India consistently from reliable travel records.
  2. 2Keep current-year days separate from preceding four-year and seven-year totals.
  3. 3Test the proposed date before changing banking or foreign-asset reporting assumptions.
  4. 4Recalculate for the following tax year because a full year in India can change the result.
